Excerpt of article text...
Many years ago, I got one of the first Wi-Fi-enabled digital scales. It was made by a company called Fitbit that also made step trackers and other gadgets. The Aria scale was cool because each time you weighed yourself, the data was automatically uploaded to the cloud. Since I'm diabetic and body weight is an important health factor for diabetes, having that data was valuable.
Soon after I began using my Fitbit scale, Apple came out with their Health app for the iPhone. This is a handy app that stores all your health-related information: biometrics and body measurements from your phone, Apple Watch, and other devices. Having a central location for this data was great.
Except that Fitbit
refused to connect to Apple Health. I remember being annoyed that they essentially held onto my data. I could manually log into their website and export it, but they wouldn't automatically upload it to Health for me.Then Google bought Fitbit, and I was
really annoyed. Google is the last company I want with my personal information. (I don't trust companies that make their money via advertising.) My Fitbit scale continued to work as always, however, and I didn't do anything drastic like throw it away (that original scale was expensive, and I hate wasting money).Recently, however, Google has threatened to shut down the Fitbit website and/or force me into getting a Google account. They've done that before and then granted me a reprieve, but for a while, I've been thinking of replacing the Fitbit scale. Before I abandoned my original model, however, I wanted to ensure that I downloaded all my data and figured out how to import it into Apple Health. I literally have over a decade of daily weights in my Fitbit account.
A few months ago, I bought a new (much cheaper) scale from a different company, and this scale connects with Apple Health automatically. That solved my immediate problem of recording my daily weight. However, I still wanted to get all my old data into Apple Health.
