Excerpt of article text...

I'll be honest: I was ambivalent about upgrading my Mac to MacOS 26 (Tahoe). Would the new Liquid Glass interface annoy me? Would I run into compatibility issues that would waste my time? Did I really need the disruption?

But then I heard that Apple's Foundation AI models (https://machinelearning.apple.com/research/introducing-apple-foundation-models) are included as part of Tahoe. These are limited, but completely free AI models that you can incorporate into your own apps and workflows. Now that intrigued me enough to upgrade.

The key advantages of these models are:

  • Free.

  • Private.

  • Local (offline for the on-device model).
