Recently, I had two complicated problems I wanted to solve. Both were out of my experience, the kind of thing that used to require a lot of research, asking on forums, and so on. So I did what comes naturally these days: I turned to AI.
At first, it was just to explore the possibilities. I asked ChatGPT (see Figure 1) how to solve the problems. That's when I got the bad news: both are difficult because they are "impossible." That challenge made me want to find a solution even more!
I've been hearing a lot of success stories about using AI for programming, but my experience hasn't been so forthcoming. Instead, I found the process to be a mix of the amazing and the frustrating.
While I won't bore you with all the tedious details of my adventures, I will give you a glimpse. Note that my lack of success is probably more due to the impossible nature of these two tasks, not the inability of AI. I'm sure with less complicated tasks, AI could be very helpful.
