Full text of article...

In 2004 I moved from California to Oregon, in part to be closer to family. Just months after arriving, my aging grandfather lost mobility and my (petite) mom could no longer care for him. Since I work from home, I volunteered to take over, and suddenly I had an 89-year-old roommate!

The last 18 months have been an incred- ible experience: learning how to deal with doctors and hospitals, managing medica- tions, coping with the sometimes amusing, sometimes tragic frustrations of Grandpa's short memory, and the sadness of watching this strong man gradually decline, all while attempting to keep up with REALbasic Developer and other projects. It hasn't been easy, but I've been blessed in ways I can't even explain. I feel so honored to have been part of Grandpa's last years.

Yesterday morning Grandpa went to be with the Lord. He'd celebrated his 91st birthday on May 9.

Though my grandfather didn't have anything to do with REALbasic Developer directly, I owe much to his influence (he was a writer and editor, in addition to being a minister for over sixty years), and I'd like to dedicate this issue to his memory.

In This Issue

Producing this issue has been more of an adventure than usual, with my grandfather in the hospital and the World Cup going on (I'm a soccer fanatic--you can check out my soccer podcast at http://www.soccertalkusa.com), but it finally did get finished and it's a good one.

I contributed a much-requested article on using REALbasic's XML classes, and Christian Schmitz chipped in with a piece on making time-limited software. Charles Yeomans begins a two-part feature on creating a visual layout editor, and for our Postmortem, Brad Rhine writes about his REALbasic-based Kodiak software for managing an entire school system.

End of article.
