Formatted Text Control Final Candidate

The Formatted Text Control (FTC) is a canvas based control for REALbasic that implements word processor capabilities similar to Apple's Pages or Microsoft's Word program. The software is completely written in REALbasic. The FTC is useful for implementing reports or general word processing capabilities within your applications. The FTC supports Mac OS X and Microsoft Windows. (It also compiles and runs under Linux, but has not been thoroughly tested.) The FTC is now in the final candidate stage which means the software is complete and is fully functional. What is not complete is the user guide documentation, but it should be completed in the near future.

REALbasic to Support Cocoa in 2009

REAL Software has announced that REALbasic will support Cocoa, Apple's framework for Mac OS X software development. As they announced at REAL World, the REAL Software User Conference, REAL Software has engineering resources devoted solely to Cocoa development. Cocoa support will be in beta in the first quarter of 2009 and will begin shipping mid-2009. Most REALbasic users will get the benefits of this modernization without having to make changes to their projects. Current REALbasic projects should recompile without any problems. Users will not need to learn the Cocoa APIs - they will continue to use the same REALbasic language they use today. REALbasic plugins that have no user interface should work without any modification. Plugins that have a user interface will need to be rewritten in Objective-C using the Cocoa APIs. With support for Cocoa will also come a number of new features including editfields that support spell-checking, however applications built with this first release of Cocoa will still have the same User Interface as applications have today, but will be built with the Cocoa framework. Future releases will include more Cocoa specific features, but users can access those framework-specific features, like Core Animation, with this first release via Declares.

Yuma 1.0 Released

Inspiring Applications, Inc. today announced the release of Yuma, a development tool that enables BASIC programmers to write web software that runs on any major server platform. Yuma users can build dynamic web sites using a readable, object-oriented language similar to VB.NET and REALbasic. Yuma testers have found it to result in faster, more efficient web development than the alternatives they had been using, and find the resulting applications to run very fast too. Yuma works in conjunction with Apache, a common web server, to provide high throughput. Inspiring Applications president Brad Weber explains, "Unlike most other web development solutions, Yuma pages are automatically compiled all the way to machine code, resulting in very fast performance even in computation-intensive applications." Benchmarks on a prime-number algorithm showed Yuma to be over six times faster than PHP, and nearly 23 times faster than JavaScript. The Yuma language sports modern features that make development easier and less error-prone, such as strong type-checking, classes, class interfaces, modules, and more. It also includes built-in classes and methods for technologies commonly needed in web apps, including files, email, regular expressions, XML, and session handling. Finally, Yuma can connect to several major database engines: SQLite, PostgreSQL, and MySQL.
