This started out as a mild winter in the Pacific Northwest—until suddenly in late January and mid-February we had snow and an incredible ice storm. Parts of the U.S., like Texas, were also hit by this unusually cold weather. Like many, I was iced in and without power for several days—basically camping indoors around the fireplace—and the lack of heat, water, and other basics was a somber reminder of priorities.
