Oops

Just before this issue went to press in mid-February, REAL Software rocked the REALbasic community with a seemingly sudden decision to cut off the REALbasic Mailing Lists I wrote about in issue 5.2 ("The Secret Resource"). Ironic timing, huh? REAL Software also supports web-based forums and wanted to consolidate the two resources.

However, forums are not a "push" medium like email, they cannot be read offline, and are much slower to browse and use than simple email. Many long-time REALbasic users refuse to use forums and were upset by this decision of REAL Software.

Then REAL Software CEO Geoff Perlman posted an excellent response to the NUG saying that he'd listened to the outcry and REAL Software was reversing their decision and keeping the main mailing list (the "Games" and "Getting Started" lists were still being eliminated).

I applaud Geoff whole-heartedly for this brave decision. I myself am a forum-hater (they are much too slow to browse and the signal-to-noise ratio is low) and much prefer the push nature of the email list. It could not have been easy to change his mind and I admire that he has demonstrated he is listening to the REALbasic community. Thank you, Geoff.

In This Issue

Our cover feature is an article I wrote on incorporating a simple drop-in Help system for your applications, but we've also got JC Cruz with more math, an interview with Maxprog's Stan Busk, and an article on optimizing code. And of course our columnists are back with neat articles on sorting, TCP, dynamic windows, and more. Enjoy!
