Association of REALbasic Professionals Formed

The Association of REALbasic Professionals was formed at the REAL World developer conference in Austin, TX, in March, 2008. The Association or REALbasic Professionals, or ARBP, is an independent organization whose purpose is to unify the profession by providing continuing professional and educational development and contribute to the community's well being by acting on behalf of its members. Elected as members of the board of directors were Bob Keeney of BKeeney Software, Norman Palardy of Great White Software, Marc Zeedar of REALbasic Developer Magazine, Paul Lefebvre of LogicalVue Software, and Brad Rhine of the Elizabethtown Area School District. Due to REAL Software's subsequent hiring of Norman Palardy, he has stepped down from his position on the board, and has been replaced by Dr. Scott Steinman of the Southern College of Optometry. ARBP aims to launch several initiatives in the coming months, including an extensive membership campaign and members-only discounts on REALbasic products and services, as well as access to exclusive product marketing resources and business opportunities.

REALbasic 2008 Release 2

REAL Software, maker of REALbasic, a cross-platform development environment for Windows, Mac OS X and Linux developers, has begun shipping REALbasic 2008 Release 2. The latest version is another delivery on the promise of continuous improvement made by the company. "We had a commitment to our community to continually refine and improve our products," stated Geoff Perlman, President and CEO of REAL Software. "With over 200 fixes in this release and the addition of a new class called Pairs, we are providing a more productive and reliable tool set to our users." Pairs allows developers to easily define key/value pairs and define linked lists. The release also increases functionality to the introspection feature, which was introduced in the February release of REALbasic. The new release includes several new capabilities involving remote debugging and bug reporting that simplifies testing and reduces developer overhead.

Release Note Browser Updated

Release Note Browser lets you type a few characters and see the REALbasic release notes that match them, within or across any combination of versions. This version adds compatibility with the new REALbasic 2008r2 HTML release note format. (Alas, it does not yet have the smarts to detect and resolve duplicated release notes, of which there are a few between the 2008r1 and 2008r2 files.)

Yuma Beta 8

This release includes builds of the Yuma Enterprise Server for all three platforms and the session feature has been expanded with the ability to expire sessions. A global SetStatus method to set the HTTP status of replies has also been added. The ServerParams values reported in the Yuma Development Server now match those reported by Apache through the Yuma Enterprise Server. Yuma is a new web development tool from Inspiring Applications, Inc. With Yuma, you can embed REALbasic code directly into HTML pages. When the page is requested, that code is executed, and its results inserted into the page before it is sent onto the browser. A Yuma page is compiled the first time it is accessed (or whenever it or any #include files it depends on have changed). This makes Yuma very fast -- significantly faster than PHP or JavaScript -- on computation-intensive applications. Yuma provides access to many of the standard RB framework classes, such as Dictionary, Random, EmailMessage, the XML classes, and more. It also provides all the standard string and numeric functions.

Yuma Forum

Inspiring Applications has set a forum for discussion of Yuma development. The forum software itself is written in Yuma, and is only about a week old; there are still a few things on the to-do list, but it's functional and we feel it has some nice improvements already over phpBB. Please give it a try, and feel free to leave us your feedback (perhaps in the "Forum Feedback" group or one of its sub-groups). Yuma is a server-side web development environment for REALbasic programmers, allowing you to embed Yuma code (which is based on REALbasic) into your HTML pages. Yuma is currently in beta.

Amalgam Plugin 2.0

Amalgam plugin constitutes the blending of pictures, window elements and responsive widgets. This allows the building of novel graphical user interface elements independent of the limits the OS imposes on the developer. Amalgam provides an overlay to existing REALbasic windows and controls, and is seamlessly integrated. Amalgam is alpha aware, and the base class "Drawable" provides a simple API to accomplish many different scenarios, complex or less complex in nature. "Drawbar" can function as a window container for multiple "Drawables", allowing the creation of a custom window, such as the window found in GarageBand. On Windows it is not difficult to create a metal looking window or you could even design window elements that can poof away, disappear, or magically move, based on your own coding or animation with the use of multiple pictures.
