The cross-platform toolbar is, in my opinion, one of the best additions made to REALbasic in recent years. In this article, we'll talk about the toolbar, including cross-platform considerations, as well as discuss icon design.
Adding a toolbar to a window is one of the easiest ways to dress up your application and make it more intuitive and discoverable. Major functions can be made obvious with well designed icons perched along the top of the window rather than hidden in menus. And in current application design trends, a toolbar has become something that most users will expect.
But as important as the toolbar can be, one of the key elements of the toolbar that is often overlooked is the most important: the icon itself.
When planning out your application, it's a good idea to sketch out your toolbars and determine what icons you're going to need from the outset. Whether you're going to design your own icons, pay for custom icon work, or purchase stock icons, you need to know what icons you're going to require.
